You are Hungry, you need to eat. For this to happen, it is necessary to prepare it. To prepare it, it is necessary to buy it. And to buy it you need to basically know what you want to eat. This is where everything begins. Your imagination and desires will uncover a plan for a defined purpose of satisfaction. You are on a Mission!! With a goal in mind and a plan of action, I wish to unravel the journey and its steps to discover that the pursuit of such attainment lies in the preparation.
The Journey is the Way
Why do I deserve to take time for each of the steps? “If you see it as a ritual and actively participate in every moment, the level of emotions you feel will be on par with those felt when first sitting in front of the plate. Taking the cutlery in your hands can be an ultimate feeling of well deserved accomplishment. This inevitable “daily practice” of cooking allows time for you to develop your consciousness and be closer to yourself. It is a time where you are preparing something rich for yourself, caressing your body and readying it to receive the best you can offer it. Take advantage and use this moment to actively meditate. Use this time to be by yourself and enjoy. You think meditations is just sitting in silence on a yoga mat? Eating is a daily necessity, so is cooking. Why not make use of this daily practice as a more convenient way of meditating every day?
Everything you do can be a Meditation
It is a natural thing! Direct your focus on the task at hand, and be aware. It can be the beginning of interesting discoveries. At first, it starts with a desire; pictures, images, memories of food and tastes arise out of your inspiration. Imagine the delicious flavours that you could give yourself. Maybe a particular element appear to your mind and you wish to create a dish out of it. Maybe a dish you haven’t eaten in a long time. What ingredients do i need? Do I know how to do it?
From your imagination to the enthusiastic selection of beautiful shapes and colorful ingredients in the market, the stimulus and enthusiasm comes from a pure desire to create and eat! Once you get all ingredients it is time to organize the scene, and prepare yuorself for the act! Its time to chop! Enjoy chopping your vegetables! Don’t hurry. Try cutting the food in a different way than normal, just for fun!
Observe the beats of sounds you create with the knife. Grab the food with your hands and place it in arrangements as if posing for a shot. Trust me, your eyes are enjoying more than you could ever imagine. Notice how the spoon softly massages the food in your pot, It is a flowing rhythm of no sound. You create the flow. Start by doing things slower, much slower than are used to. It will help you to see what’s happening. Our standard way of cooking quickly and effectively can easily become a habit, however it kills the importance of each single step. Beware of it!
How long does it take you to prepare your food? From the beginning of the cooking, until you put it on the table? How much time has passed? Consider the time you spend sitting and eating, as well as actively chewing and swallowing. 10 minutes? 15 minutes? How long is the food in your mouth? How many seconds do you enjoy flavours before ingesting them? This little moment of pleasure lasts far less than the time we take to prepare it. The excitement is all in the preparation, the disclosure of steps taken, the building and assembling of each part. When you do this, it leads to a moment of focus and determination with the exclusive ambition to achieve satisfaction. This energy is what stays within the body, bringing out a conscious state of what is about to happen.
Cooking empowers full presence in the now
This passionate devotion during cooking, this “pre” phase defines a lot of the actual eating phase. I believe that this preparation phase highly contributes to the taste of your meals in a much deeper sense. The final gustation of flavours in your mouth are then connected directly to the time in the kitchen. Your mind can proudly recognize the long path taken up until that present point. Realising this connection is very satisfying. It is a way of honouring the ceremony in a holistic way, lengthening and paying gratitude to the purpose of cooking.
Since I have acknowledged this in my life, I no longer find pleasure in eating in restaurants. Having the food brought to your table, by someone you don’t even know, and prepared in mysterious ways I cannot associate with, unfortunately means the magic has been lost along the way. Too often, my imagination doesn’t reflect what I get on my plate and the food quickly disappears unnoticed by all my senses.
I wish to encourage you to start by appreciating each step even if it is assembling sandwich together and putting it in your tupperware, or unwrapping a package in a delicate and attentively way. Allow other senses such as smells and sounds be part of this action. Small Steps of awareness are a great start for everything. Implementing such little awareness moments in your daily food interactions can open your mind and bring a state of content. In a delicious way empowering You over your mind.
